INSTALLATION
Developed in parallel with the creation of his second solo album of the same name, NONDUAL by Albert van Abbe is an audiovisual installation which utilizes generative audio and visual technology to create an extended, abstract and boundless concert experience; a non-present presentation carries the improvisational beauty of generative technologies. Delineated by live concerts both at its start, end and throughout the exhibition is a concert experience in the most potent and rarified sense; a multi-sensory contemplation on the synergy of shape, form and colour. The concerts will feature two artists integral to the album’s creation: Nene H – opening the exhibiting on Grand Piano, and Byetone – collaborating on live electronics for the closing event. An opening concert catalyzes the setting of visual and auditory attentiveness. As on the album, the minimalistic prepared piano by Nene H informs the works core – creating the sparse, haptic blueprint for the beautifully rich world which perpetually develops ‘ad infinitum’ throughout the exhibition period. High-resolution, sweeping colors swathe the projection surface, and undulate across the screen, With no other focal point and no performers, viewers are lured into an ever-changing, unpredictable canvas. The creative improvisation during the live performances mimicked in the visuals via generative software designed by Andreas Nicholas Fischer. The closing concerts brings the exhibition to a close, where Raster co-founder and seminal artist Byetone joins Albert van Abbe for an improvised live performance together.

ALBERT VAN ABBE
Having worked within the broader audio-visual arts field for nearly two decades, Albert van Abbe creates sonic architectures for intimacy, sensibility and movement. Spaces in which you can lose yourself and find oneself at the same time. He has a deep interest in the concept of synaesthesia, in addition to ongoing research in kinetic and spatial sound experiments. A self-titled veteran ‘sound builder’, Albert van Abbe has just about covered the whole field of electronic music over the course of the last 20 years; from minimalistic sound installations to uncompromising hardcore acid productions, a long list of collaborative works, institutional partnerships and public projects with artists of various mediums add to an exciting list of performances both inside and outside the club. Albert van Abbe’s musical output can be perceived as deeply melancholic in one sense, and genuinely uplifting from another.

In addition to an upcoming collaborative album with Byetone (Olaf Bender), Albert van Abbe’s new solo album ‘Nondual’, a forthcoming release as well, has been inspired by Nondualism. Nonduality refers to the recognition that what we essentially are, behind this seeming multiplicity and diversity of objects, others and selves, is a single indivisible reality.

On the horizon, Albert van Abbe continues to experiment with various formats, in particular with shifts in the live music and events industry. Further A/V projects, installations and reactive light works are central, working closely with Lumus Instruments in the Netherlands. Studio production is still active as well, with another collaboration with Speedy J – created using an array of 1950’s-era measuring equipment, in addition to an ongoing residency program at Willem Twee Studio’s, in which van Abbe invites guests to collaborate on a massive analog modular system together.

ANDREAS NICHOLAS FISCHER / STUDIO A N F
Andreas Nicolas Fischer is an artist whose work is concerned with the physical manifestation of digital processes and data through generative systems. Through his practice he investigates the effects of technology and automation on society and contemporary art. Fischer graduated from the class of professor Joachim Sauter at the Berlin University of the Arts. Fischer’s work has been exhibited globally in museums, galleries and festivals across Europe, Asia and the US.

Studio A N F was founded in 2008, and operates at the intersection of art and technology, encompassing a multitude of media-like graphics, animation, data visualization, sculpture and public space installations.

OPENING CONCERT
For this inaugural performance in the Concert Hall, live electronics from NONDUAL creator Albert van Abbe are enhanced by delicate prepared notes by Nene H on Grand Piano. In layered unison, the duo carries the interpretive impression drafted behind them across a colossal digital canvas, as generative visuals perpetually reinvent themselves. This is not a typical A/V show, but instead a concert reimagined as an immersive synesthetic world. While the concert between musicians demarcates the exhibitions first public viewing, its role is twofold. The recording of the night is indexed as sonic medium, sourced by the work itself for the next month as it perpetually generates new material from the initial live session. In parallel to the haptic generative visuals developed in conjunction with Studio ANF, the Concert Hall will seem to infinitely echo the initial sound of this concert.

This opening concert is introduced by local Ukrainian producer Voin Oruwu.

KYOKA (JP)

Kyoka is a Japanese musician and composer based in Berlin and Tokyo, who has gained notoriety for her glitch-heavy electronic productions. Somehow maintaining danceable rhythms interspersed with vocal samples, Kyoka’s experimental fusing of broken techno with pop sensibilities is startling. Classically-trained as a child on piano, flute and syamisen lessons, while listening and recording radio shows to tape in her teens, she became attracted to the possibilities of scratching them, and soon she begun to use the tape recorder for cutting, editing and producing her first rough sounds. The mid-90s saw Kyoka explore the potential of synthesisers and computers, this led to releasing her compositions on raster(-noton) – among other labels.

FLORA YIN-WONG (UK)

London-born producer, writer and DJ, Flora Yin-Wong experiments with early instruments, digital software processing and lo-fi rudimentary recordings. She has contributed productions and remixes for the likes of Giant Swan, Circadian Rhythms, J Colleran, Scintii, to Angoisse and Archaic Vaults.Flora’s duality has also ensured she’s retained a firm presence in the club atmosphere as both a DJ and performer. A London native exposed to UK garage, bass/funky and IDM, to post punk from an early age, she found an affinity for all things dance throughout techno and house. Equally her words find a balance between the oblique and the accessible – previously as an editor at DAZED, and contributor for AnOther, Monocle, and most recently Zweikommasieben.

SHEMOVESSHE (UA)

Shemovesshe is the experimental ambient drone project of Gael Abakarova (also performing as ‘Gael’) – a musician and DJ originally from Dagestan, Russia and now based in Kyiv. DASHA RUSH (DE)

Dasha Rush is a Russian-born electronic music composer, sound artist and DJ, but her work continues through interdisciplinary practice, often with unique collaborations and themes. She likes to push the boundaries of contemporary music to the limit, yet still encourages experimentation with various musical (and non-musical) forms. Her last album, Sleepstep, could be a metaphor for her musical work – reflection of the in- between zones her music often inhabits. Dasha Rush is currently part of the curatorial board at Spacial Sound Institute in Budapest, with the current residency focusing on the development and experimentation in new spatial sound technology.

FRIEDENSREICH (UA)

Mykyta Hriaznov is Friedensreich – a modular synth performer and synth-activist from Ukraine, co-founder of Modular.UA community and staple of the Corridor Audio label. Mykyta’s fascination with modular instruments began in 2011. Since that time, he has developed an improvisational workflow, which he is calling “Modular Random Techno” – a way of playing live using modular synthesizers. Essentially, the workflow allows full-on improvisation within live performance, and is based on an ever-changing modular system – each individually compiled fro every performance.

BURNING WOMAN (UA)

Being born and raised in an industrial region of Ukraine, Burning Woman was exposed to the gloomy atmosphere of large-scale manufacturing plants and the noisy environment of ever-growing construction sites since early childhood. At some point, she learned to love the decadent sight, and especially the sound of her hometown, developing a taste for avant-garde music, experimental electronics, noise, dark ambient, drone, and techno. Today, as a Kyiv-based DJ and musician, Burning Woman draws inspiration from various sources and constantly develops her own sound, using different methods of digital audio processing and synthesis as well as field recordings. This way she tries to express her individual experience of interaction with the world and her perception of it through music.
